A SmartMesh-enabled wireless sensor network from GE Sensing was selected over a hard-wired solution because it eliminated sterility concerns of hard-to-clean wiring conduit, and provided ease-of-installation when measuring conditions in incubators, refrigeration units, ductwork, and rotating equipment. The facility's vast amounts of stainless steel equipment and glass presented unique challenges for the installation of wireless sensors, which had to be highly secure, accurate, and reliable. Ease-of-use was also important since highly trained biologists, not IT experts, would be running the equipment.
Intelligent self-configuration enables nodes to automatically adjust to a dynamic RF environment, blocked signals, and interference. The network is self-organizing and self-healing, meaning that when transmission is hindered, it rearranges itself and automatically finds a new path. This ensures that all the critical data gets through, and is recorded accurately.
The new system allows technicians to remotely view real-time data and compile historical sensor data for client reports, providing considerable savings in time and labor.
