Sensors everywhere

That’s the opening line of the ‘soapbox speech’ we’ve been making for a long while at Dust Networks. ‘Sensors everywhere’ is a self explanatory evocation of the internet-of-things, but what underpins its realization? There are some very basic wireless enablers that make the vision a reality:

  • We can put a wireless sensor wherever it is needed, not just where there’s already a power or communications infrastructure. Low power radios and power-savvy protocols have solved this problem.
  • Networks are smart. They self-form and self-heal, so that installers need not be wireless experts and maintenance is hands-off.
  • Properly designed wireless sensor networks are as reliable as wires, and as secure as the best enterprise network implementations.

Bottom line: the cost and risk of implementing the internet-of-things are now manageable. When we first got on our soapbox, we had great charts that said we had the recipe for products that would enable ‘sensors everywhere’. Now there are thousands of Dust-enabled networks deployed- our customers are building fantastic applications that push the limits of what can be done when you put sensors in places they simply couldn’t go before and apply innovative applications to the newly accessible data. Monitoring the water supply? No problem http://bit.ly/pXznGx . Saving energy in data centers http://bit.ly/nKoLUU? Sure. Reducing urban traffic congestion http://bit.ly/phnhel ? It’s been done. What’s possible? Just ask our customers.
